I made a mistake in part 7 saying that it would be the last post in this series. I have found a couple of other ancestors that are included in the Mormon Pioneer Overland Trail Database. This post is about my 4th great grandfather Lewis Taft.

Lewis Taft traveled in the Jesse Murphy Company. The group left Florence Nebraska on June 19th, 1860 in wagons. They arrived in Salt Lake on August 30th of 1860.

Lewis traveled with his wife Johanna. Lewis Taft's first wife (and my 4th great grandmother) Lucinda Cobb had died on July 3rd of 1858.

I came across a photo of this cabin from a website that discusses some of the history of Ogden, Utah. It appears to be a photo of the cabin that my 4th great-grandfather Lewis Taft lived in when he was in Ogden, Utah. This photo was taken in 1986. The website says the cabin was finally torn down in 1989.

I hadn't been able to find the record of Emeline Taft Washburn in the 1880 census. However today while searching for something else concerning my 3rd great grandmother, I came across the record.

Here is a link to the record.

In 1880, she was living in Ogden, Utah with her son Wallace Taft Washburn (my 2nd great grandfather.) The occupation listed is "Keeping House." The age listed in 1880 is 45. She is also listed as a widow in the census record which only deepens this mystery.

The age listed for Wallace is 22 and his occupation is listed as laborer.

Emeline and Wallace are listed as living with a Lewis and Joanna Taft, both age 75. These are probably her father and step-mother. Lewis would be my 4th great grandfatherMark Petersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16811265455803570205noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2508506932156771496.post-85409396056177867232013-11-27T08:43:00.000-06:002013-11-27T08:43:19.563-06:00Neriah Thomas Moore (1858-1943): WorkThe following was written by my 2nd great grandfater Neriah Thomas Moore Jr. It is about his work history with the Ogden, Utah fire department.

The list of those who spoke at his funeral is impressive but I find most interesting the name of one of the pall bearers, H. A. Thorup, which I presume to be another third great grandfather of mine, Herman August Thorup.
JOHN SQUIRES LAID AWAY.

Impressive Funeral of Pioneer at the First Ward Meeting House.

The last kindly offices that could be performed for John Squires, the pioneer barber, were done yesterday afternoon. The services at the First ward meeting house were conducted by Bishop Warburton and were very impressive. The house was crowded to overflowing by those who had known him for years, and their presence, together with the fragrance of the many beautiful flowers were eloquent testimonies of the high respect in which men held him. The music was furnished by the ward choir and a quartet.

The opening prayer was offered by Elder James Sharp and the choir sang "I Need Thee Every Hour," and "O, My Father." The quartet, consisting of Thomas Ashworth, Fred C. Graham, Victor Christopherson and Charles R. Pike, rendered "The Night of Rest," "The Beautiful Country," and "Nearer My God to Thee."

Appropriate remarks were made by Apostle George Teasdale, Bishop George Romney, Thomas Udahl, of Nephi, J. Golden Kimball, Joseph McMurrin, George Reynolds, Joseph E. Taylor and Bishop Warburton, and the benediction was pronounced by Elder Richard W. Young. A very long cortege of carriages followed the remains to the grave. The pall bearers were: A.Milton Musser, William Campbell, Thomas Johnson, George Hilton, Francis Scholes and H. A. Thorup.Mark Petersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16811265455803570205noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2508506932156771496.post-75375784648155076512013-03-24T12:49:00.000-05:002013-03-24T12:49:42.447-05:00Warren Azro Washburn (1835-1907): Gravesite

DEMISE OF ANOTHER PIONEER

John Squires, one of the best known pioneers of the state, passed into the great beyond last night, with but one month needed to make him eighty-one years old. His demise was the result of the ravages of years and he had been falling for the last few months. He was born in Wellwyn, Herefordshire, Eng., December 23, 1820 and emigrated to Utah in 1853, having cast in his lot with the "Mormon" people. He entered the barber business at the age of thirteen and followed it actively until about three years ago. He was, for many years, Prest. Brigham Young's barber and went with him on all his journeys through the state. He performed an honorable two-years' mission in England and with that exception he resided continuously in Utah. Mr. Squires possessed a strong constitution and had many more years of activity to his credit than is usually incorporated in one life. He had four wives and thirty-nine children and is survived by his fourth wife, twenty-two children and four great grandchildren. Nearly all of his sons and grandsons are following his calling.
The funeral will be held from the First ward meeting house Sunday and 12 o'clock.Mark Petersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16811265455803570205noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2508506932156771496.post-45362439969960352232013-01-14T06:13:00.000-06:002013-01-14T06:13:41.425-06:00Henry Maiben: Additional Song

This post at the blog Times and Seasons alerted me to another song written by my 3rd great grandfather Henry Maiben. The post called the title of the song "Come, Mormons, All attention pay." So I went looking for it and found the song in a book called The Mountain Warbler. The song begins on page 67. The songs in the book have no music and just list the tune name. This song is sung to the tune of "The King of the Cannibal Islands" (of which I am not familiar.)

The subject of the song is the paying of tithing. If there was a title listed for the song, I would have guessed it would be "Come Forward, and Pay Up Your Tithing." The words of the song are below.

This certificate has her place of birth as Brighton, England on October 16th, 1847. Her parents are Henry and Caroline Penn Maiben.

She passed away on May 6th, 1920 in Logan, Utah. Cause of death appears to be pneumonia. (It is difficult to read.)

This couple traveled in the David Wilkin Company in 1853. This company traveled by wagon from the Iowa/Nebraska border to Salt Lake City. They left on June 1st and arrived on September 9th. The couple had no children at the time. Basically he gives all his land to his sons and has his sons pay each of his daughters 100 pounds. His daughter Mary Magdalene is my 4th great grandmother. He appears to call her Sally in the will. (Mary Magdaline is the mother of Lucinda Romig (my 3rd great grandmonther.)

This next will is for his father (my 6th great grandfather) Ludwig Laross.

From what I have gathered, Ludwig was actually from France and his name was Jean Louis la Rose. He appears to have started using a German version of his name when he married into this group of German immigrants in Pennsylvania. He calls his wife Cunnigunda. Another source shows her name as Ann Kunigunda Schadin.Mark Petersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16811265455803570205noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2508506932156771496.post-54932525426485687202012-12-04T06:23:00.000-06:002012-12-04T06:23:09.262-06:00Caroline Penn: Newspaper Article on her Death

The article above appeared in the Deseret News on October 19th, 1864. Caroline Penn Maiben (my third great grandmother) had died on the 15th, just 4 days earlier. This article has many beautiful things written about her. Below is the text of the article:

DEATH OF MRS. CAROLINE MAIBEN

On Friday evening last Caroline Penn, the wife of Mr. Henry Maiben, of this city, departed this life, after a severe illness of 13 days, aged 47 years and 7 months.

A virtuous, loving wife,
She spent a most industrious life.
Of mothers too, one of the best.
So neat, so clean, so kind, so blest:
On earth, her mission, well she fill'd
And when, to call her hence, God will'd
In perfect happiness she sped,
To mingle with the righteous dead;
And now, her trials being o'er,
She'll live in bliss for evermore.
We miss the dear departed one,
Yet feel to say, "God's will be done." -COM.

President Brigham Young was present at the funeral ceremonies, and delivered a very impressive and consoling address to the numerous friends of the deceased.

Mr. John T. Caine has furnished us the following for publication, which shows the high esteem Sister Maiben was held in by those who knew her:

At an informal meeting of the Deseret Dramatic Association, held on the Stage of the Theatre after the performance on Saturday evening, Oct. 15th, inst., Mr Clawson being called to the Chair and Mr. Clayton appointed Secretary, Mr. Caine presented the following expressive resolutions, which were unanimously adopted:

WHEREAS, It has pleased the Supreme Ruler in His infinite wisdom, to remove from our midst, by death, our beloved sister, Mrs. Caroline Maiben:
The Deseret Dramatic Association, whilst humbly bowing to this visitation of an all-wise Providence, deeply regret the loss of one of its most worthy and useful members, a lady whose virtue, modesty and amiability won for her the affection and esteem of all who had the pleasure of her acquaintance, Therefore
RESOLVED, That the Members of the Association, sincerely sympathising with the bereaved husband and family, tender them their heartfelt condolence in the loss of so excellent a wife and mother.
RESOLVED, That as a mark of respect to the deceased, the Members of the Association attend her funeral to-morrow. Further,
RESOLVED, That a copy of these Resolutions be transmitted to the bereaved family, and that the Editors of the DESERET NEWS and Daily Telegraph be requested to publish the same.
In 1881, Herman Fredrick Ferdinand Thorup was returning from one of his missions to Denmark (his second I believe.)

On June 20, 1881, he sailed from Copenhagen, Denmark to Hull, England on the ship Hero. The passengers from the ship then took the train to Liverpool.

Then from Liverpool, England, he sailed to New York City on the ship Wyoming. This ship sailed June 25th from Liverpool and arrived in New York on July 7th, 1881. The picture above is from the ship's passenger list an shows his name listed.
This letter from the leader of the group that was emigrating to America says the Herman was one of the councilors to the president of the Scandinavian saints.
